Mike Hanzelka
Mike Hanzelka started with the Govenaires as a performing member of the brass section in 2007. He has been active in the corps ever since, taking on roles with the administrative, instructional, and design teams. He recently served as Visual Caption Head for several seasons, and was Artistic Director of the 2024 and 2025 corps that went on to finish first in Class A at the Drum Corps International (DCI) All-Age championships.
Mike’s outdoor performance experience began at Irondale High School as a member of the Marching Knights. He later marched euphonium and tuba with Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps. After performing with the Kentucky-based corps for three seasons in DCI World Class, he was honored to accept Southwind’s Jamie King Member of the Year Award in 2006.
At Govenaires, Mike was a performing member of several Drum Corps Associates (DCA) Class A championship seasons (2009, 2011, 2015). He also performed internationally with the Govenaires, traveling to Shanghai in 2016, Austria in 2019 & 2022, and Ireland in 2025. In 2025, he performed at the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City with the Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps from Nashua, N.H. As a movement instructor, he has taught various indoor/outdoor performance ensembles across Minnesota. Outside of outdoor pageantry, Mike has decades of experience as a musician and recording artist.
Mike is a 2008 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato. He works as a Solutions Analyst and lives in historic Carver with his wife, Molly, and two cats, Freddy and Bebe.
