At the North Star Championships, held on Saturday, April 5th, the Govenaires color guard earned a score of 70.65, placing them in first as the Independent World Class Champions! The North Star Winter Guard circuit serves the upper Midwest and over 20 guards compete in this circuit. The Govenaires' winter guard was led by instructors Rob Thomas and Jeffrey Peterson, both long-time members of the Govenaires and the activity of color guard. The winter guard performed a show to the music of DeVotchka, and all of the 12 members had input into the design of the show.
When discussing the idea to compete as a winter guard, Rob Thomas said, "We had such a great season during the summer that we didn't want it to end there, so Jeffrey approached me about doing a winter guard. We never went into the winter season with winning a championship as a goal, but it was nice for people to see why the Govenaires color guard have been Drum Corps Associates Class A Champions for the past four years. It felt great to get this recognition at the North Star Championships." Jeffrey Peterson stated, "We just wanted to have more reasons to get together every Sunday to spin, be with friends, and be good doing it. It's nice that for us, that all equated to a championship." The Govenaires last fielded a competitive winter guard in 2002, which also won the Independent World North Star Championship.
