Govenaires Announce 2018 Design Team and Caption Heads

Kate Falvey - Corps Director
Kate Falvey returns in her second year at the helm of the Govenaires. She has had many roles within the organization during her 27-year involvement, but this is the one she is most excited to fulfill. As an educator, Kate recognizes the value of the Govenaires’ experience. Kate has Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in German from the University of Northern Iowa and has been a German teacher for 12 years. Kate marched in the color guard with the Colts in 1996 (in between her many years with the Govenaires).
Currently, Kate is teaching German in the Prior Lake-Savage School District. She lives in Savage, Minnesota with her husband, Andy, their two daughters, Freya and Tiegan, and their dog, Flip. Life-long learning is a way of life for Kate, and she wishes to instill this in the membership and staff that she leads. Pride in the Corps is Kate’s favorite piece of the corps motto and she is excited for what is happening with the corps this year!
Larry Pawlowski - Music Director
Larry Pawlowski returns to the Govenaires as Music Director. With over thirty-one years of teaching experience in the Chicago area, Larry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.
As a recently retired band director, his concert bands at Lincoln Park High School and De La Salle Institute have earned Superior placements and top-honors in state and city competitions. He also served as a marching band instructor with Andrew High School in Tinley Park, IL and with Warren Township High School in Gurnee, IL.
Larry marched nine years in The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, going on to instruct for six more. He also instructed Phantom Regiment for four non-consecutive seasons. He has marched with and instructed various all-age corps, including the Chicago Vanguard, the Kilties, the Bushwackers, and the Hawthorne Caballeros.
Larry started instructing the Govenaires on-and-off since 2002. He became Brass Caption Head in 2009, when they took their second DCA Class A Championship and won their first caption award for High Brass.
He performed with the Northwest Chicago Orchestra for two years, and the The Jack Foy and Skyliner Jazz Band for many years. Recently, he's studied trumpet with Dr. Leah Schuman of VanderCook School of Music.
Andy Falvey - Visual Caption Head and Drill Design
Visual Caption Head/Drill Writer Andy Falvey returns for his 8th year writing the drill and supervising the visual team. His designs are well-suited for our drum corps and he brings a creative, yet easy-to-learn-and-perform quality to his writing. It is this approach that makes Govenaires’ shows enjoyable for both the membership and the audience year after year. Andy has worked with drum corps and marching bands in Minnesota, Iowa, New York, Wisconsin, and Michigan since 2000. He marched as a baritone with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps from 1992-1999. In addition to the Govenaires, Andy writes drill for marching band and is currently writing for several indoor percussion organizations in Minnesota. Andy lives in Savage, Minnesota with his wife, Kate, two daughters: Tiegan and Freya, and their dog, Flip. Andy’s dedication to quality and creativity is something that we at the Govenaires take pride in – Dedication to Performance, part of our motto, is definitely something that Andy excels at within our organization!
Jack Donovan - Percussion Caption Head and Battery Arranger
Jack Donovan is the newest addition to the Govenaires' design and leadership team. Jack is a percussionist, performer, and educator located in the Twin Cities, where he is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Minnesota. Before attending the U of M, Jack earned his BM from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, and his MM from Kansas State University, where he was a graduate teaching assistant with the bands and percussion studio, as well as the coordinator for the Pride of Wildcat Land Drumline. He also teaches private lessons in the Twin Cities area.
Jack has a very diverse background of performing experiences. He has performed at large events such as the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC), and he has performed around the world in places like South Africa and Costa Rica. Jack has also performed extensively throughout the marching arts with groups such as the Madison Scouts, Minnesota Brass, and the Minnesota Vikings Skol Line.
Molly Hanzelka - Color Guard Caption Head
Molly Hanzelka began her career with the Govenaires in 1994. During her 23-year involvement with the corps she has been a performer, technician, choreographer, staff coordinator, program coordinator, and colorguard caption head.
Outside of the Govenaires, Molly’s performance experience includes the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps and Onyx, a World Class winterguard from Dayton, OH, along with various local colorguard and modern dance organizations.
Molly has taught numerous high school and independent programs throughout the Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Ohio including: fall marching band, winterguard, and summer parade marching. She is a director, choreographer, and design consultant. She is also a marching arts costume designer/producer. Molly lives and works in the Twin Cities area and is looking forward to another fun, exciting, and successful season in 2018!
Dennis Argul - Brass Arranger
Dennis Argul returns as brass arranger for the Govenaires, a position he has held since 2007.
With over 33 years of experience in music education, he is currently Supervisor of Music for Elizabeth (NJ) Public Schools and a freelance low brass musician in the New York metropolitan area.
Dennis is active as a brass arranger, clinician, and adjudicator. In addition to judging DCI competitions this past season, he has worked with many corps in the DCI and DCA circuits, including the Cadets, Bridgemen, Bushwackers, Carolina Gold, Sunrisers, Caballeros, and High Country Brass.
Outside of drum corps, he serves as a composer, arranger, clinician and adjudicator for various marching bands throughout the United States.
Aaron Hartwell - Brass Caption Head
Aaron Hartwell returns as Brass Caption Head. He started playing trumpet in 5th grade, and went on to marched 4 years in the Mankato Area 77 Lancers Marching Band. As a student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, he performed in several university ensembles including: Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Marching Band and Pep Band.
Aaron began marching with the Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps in 1998 and has been with the organization ever since, being a part of four DCA Class A World Championship seasons. He has also performed with the Southern Minnesota Real Big Band, The Echos, Bass Brand Brass Band and The Mostly Conical Brass Quartet. Throughout his years in the musical arts, he has performed with various artists, including: Denis DiBlasio, Bobby Shew, Luke Gillespie, Pat Harbison, Nachito Herrera, Kenni Holman, Dave Pietro, Juan Tony Guzman and The HornHeads.
When he is not playing, he enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife and daughter.
Josh Forbord - Brass Instructor
Josh Forbord originally hails from Coon Rapids, MN. He holds a B.A. in Music from Minnesota State University, Mankato. During his time there, he was principle tuba with the University Wind Ensemble, and participated in the Jazz Maverick Big Band as well as several small combos. He was selected selected to the CBDNA Intercollegiate Honor Band four times, and also performed with a regional CBDNA Honor Band.
Josh performs around southern Minnesota with the Bass Brand Brass Band and the Mostly Conical Brass Quartet. His passion for the marching arts began in high school, where he participated in the fall marching band and indoor drumline all four years. He went on to march Minnesota Brass in 2006 and the Madison Scouts in 2007, followed by the Govenaires from 2007 to 2017 (almost always marching Tuba). He has served on the staff of the Govenaires since 2015 as a low brass technician. He currently calls St. Peter, MN home and lives with his girlfriend, son, two cats and the dog.
Jeffrey Peterson - Visual Consultant
Jeffrey Peterson is a performer, educator, and choreographer within and across dance and colorguard. He’s performed on the field and floor with the Madison Scouts, the Every-Body Winterguard, as well as on the stage in the choreography of Jose Limon, Doug Varone, Bill T. Jones, Zvi Gotheiner, and Chris Aiken. His professional dance experience includes JAZZDANCE By Danny Buraczeski, Clare Byrne, Edisa Weeks, and for the Minnesota Opera, to name a few. Hailed by the St. Paul Pioneer Press as "moving and heart-racingly joyous,” Jeffrey's choreography has received creative support in commissions from Dance New Amsterdam's In the Company of Men and Movement Research at Judson Memorial Church in New York City, as well as Rhythmically Speaking in Minneapolis. His work has also been seen in The Minnesota Fringe Festival, and at Intermedia Arts, Dixon Place (NY), and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, to name a few.
Jeffrey is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Muhlenberg College, where he teaches jazz, modern, partnering, dance composition, and movement analysis. He holds a certification in Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals from Integrated Movement Studies, an MFA in dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and his BFA in dance from the U of MN.
A Govie since 2002, he’s thrilled to again return to the staff of the Govenaires for 2018.
